Betula

As the first individual industrial design project we were to make a seating object withing the limits of 50x50x50cm. I wanted to make a furniture with multiple functions and wanted to implement storage space. Betula is a seating furniture and a side table made from birch. The rounded edges, the columns and the arches gives it a holistic design language. The furniture piece consists of repeating geometric forms, vertical circular prisms and horizontal surfaces intersecting with a half cylinder. The columns supporting the structure create multiple negative spaces that interact with the arches, making the piece visually engaging from different angles. The columns are stained with colored linseed oil, while the arches are left in untreated wood. The design considers production efficiency, as the arches can be laminated in a single mold and all columns share the same radius. Betula is versatile in use, functioning also as a side table, and it fits seamlessly into various spaces within the home. The columns are available in different colors, allowing users to personalize the piece according to their own taste.
